from Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd and Sulaymān ibn al-Mughīrah, both reporting from Ḥumayd with the same wording.
Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān informed us; Ibn Qudāmah informed us. Abū Jaʿfar al-Sulamī also informed us, and al-Bahāʾ ʿAbd al-Raḥmān informed us, saying:
“Abū al-Fatḥ ibn Shātil informed us; ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad al-Razzāz informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Yaʿqūb the judge informed us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Saqqāʾ narrated to us; Zakariyyā al-Saji narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Ḥarashī narrated to us; ʿĀmir ibn Yasāf al-Yamāmī narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from al-Ḥasan, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘O Abū Hurayrah! Shall I not tell you of a matter that is the very truth—whoever utters it after death will be saved?’ He then related a hadith that is rejected (munkar) (1), and ʿĀmir’s narrations are weak.
Muslim (no. 505), Book of Prayer, chapter: “The prohibition against passing in front of someone who is praying.” It is also recorded by Abu Dawud (no. 700) with the wording: “When one of you prays toward something that screens him from the people and someone wishes to pass in front of him, let him push him back at his chest; if he refuses, let him fight him, for he is only a devil.”
A version cited by al-Ismaʿili, reported by Ibn Hajar, reads: “for Satan is with him,” and Muslim has a similar variant (no. 506) from the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar: “for his qarin (companion) is with him.”
(1) This report appears in Kamil Ibn ʿAdi, fol. 266b, through Abu Nasr al-Tammar, from ʿAmir. Its full wording is:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Abu Hurayra, shall I tell you something true—whoever pronounces it upon first lying down when illness strikes will be saved by Allah from the Fire?” I replied, “Yes, may my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah.”
He said: “Know that when you reach the morning you may not live to see the evening, and when you reach the evening you may not live to see the morning. If you do the following at the onset of your illness while on your bed, Allah will deliver you from the Fire: say, ‘La ilaha illa Allah (there is no god but Allah), He gives life and causes death, and He is the Living One who never dies. Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah), Lord of the servants. Al-hamd lillah (praise be to Allah)—abundant, good and blessed praise in every circumstance. Allahu akbar (Allah is greater) in greatness; the majesty, splendour and power of our Lord are present everywhere. O Allah, if You have made me ill in order to take my soul at the beginning of this illness, then place my soul among those whose lot of goodness You have already decreed, and keep me far from the Fire just as You have kept far from it Your friends for whom You decreed goodness. If you die during this illness, you will have Allah’s good pleasure—Paradise.’” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ added: “And if you have committed sins, Allah will forgive you.”
