The ninth year:
It is reported that, in Rabīʿ al-Awwal, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched a force against the Qurṭāʾ. The commander was al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Sufyān al-Kilābī, accompanied by al-Aṣyad b. Salamah b. Qurṭ. They encountered the enemy at al-Zajj, in the district of Lawah. After inviting them to embrace Islam and being rebuffed, the Muslims fought and routed them. Al-Aṣyad then overtook his father Salamah, called him to Islam, and guaranteed his safety. Salamah cursed both him and the religion, whereupon al-Aṣyad hamstrung his father’s horse. A Muslim eventually came up and killed Salamah—his son did not strike the fatal blow.
In Rabīʿ al-Thānī it was said that the Prophet ﷺ received word that a group of Abyssinians had been sighted by the people of Jeddah. He therefore sent ʿAlqamah b. Mujazziz al-Mudliji at the head of three hundred men. They reached an island in the sea, but the Abyssinians had already fled.
During the same month ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him) led an expedition against al-Fuls—the idol of the tribe of Ṭayyʾ—to demolish it. He had one hundred and fifty Ansar with him, mounted on one hundred camels and fifty horses, bearing a black banner and a white standard. At dawn they raided the encampment of the family of Ḥātim, tore down al-Fuls and laid it waste, and carried off abundant captives, camels, and sheep. Among the captives was the sister of ʿAdī b. Ḥātim, while ʿAdī himself fled to Syria.
Around the same time ʿUkāshah b. Miḥṣan undertook an expedition to the land of ʿUdhrah.
Our teacher al-Damyāṭī mentions these raids in his Mukhtaṣar al-Sīrah, and I suspect he took them
