Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He would debate the ḥadith master Aḥmad ibn al-Furāt, review reports with him, and exchange counter-arguments, all while still a young man.

Abū Shaykh states in his History: “He is the teacher of our teachers and their imām; he lived long enough to meet Sahl ibn ʿUthmān.”

I say: Sahl was one of Imām Muslim’s teachers; he died in the early 230s AH (1).

Abū Shaykh also said: Ibn Manda passed away in Rajab of 301 AH.

Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf the Qurʾān-reciter narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Ẓāfir narrated to us; Abū Ṭāhir al-Silafī narrated to us; Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb—son of the ḥadith master Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq ibn Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Manda—narrated to us; my father and my two uncles told us, saying: our father Abū ʿAbd Allāh related to us; my father related to us; my father told me; Saʿīd ibn ʿAnbasah narrated to us; Baqiyyah narrated to us, from Baḥīr, from Khālid ibn Maʿdān, from Abū Ziyād, who said: “I asked ʿĀʾishah about eating onions, and she replied, ‘The last food the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—ate contained onions.’”

This is an isolated report with an acceptable chain. Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal also recorded it in his Musnad (2) through Ḥaywah ibn Shurayḥ, from Baqiyyah.

Ishāq ibn Abī Bakr narrated to us; Ibn Khalīl narrated to us; Abū al-Makārim al-Taymī narrated to us; Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥaddād narrated to us; Abū Nuʿaym the ḥāfiẓ narrated to us; Sulaymān ibn Aḥmad narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Manda narrated to us; Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Naḍr narrated to us; Abū al-Naḍr narrated to us; Abū ʿAqīl al-Thaqafī narrated to us; Mujālid narrated to us; ʿAwn ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us—

(1) The author records him in al-Ibar, 1/414, under the obituaries for the year 233 AH; he also has a biographical entry in al-Tadhkira, 2/452-453. (2) Musnad Ahmad, 6/89; Abu Dawud, no. 3829, Book of Foods, chapter “On eating garlic.” In Ahmad’s version, Baqiyyah explicitly states that he transmitted the report. As for Abu Ziyad—namely Khiyar ibn Salamah—no one declared him reliable except Ibn Hibban.
