Al-Ḥākim said, “I heard Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad say: My maternal grandfather Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm died in the year 305 AH.”
Al-Ḥākim further remarked, “He was one of the leading notables and chieftains of Nīshāpūr, well-accepted in hadith narration and transmission.”
102 – al-Jubbāʾī, Abū ʿAlī Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Baṣrī*
The senior figure among the Muʿtazilites and a prolific author, Abū ʿAlī Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Baṣrī.
Died: in Basra, 303 AH.
Studied under: Abū Yaʿqūb al-Shahhām.
Lifespan: sixty-eight years.
At his death he was succeeded by his son, the eminent scholar Abū Hāshim (1) al-Jubbāʾī.
Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī also learned the craft of kalām (speculative theology) from him, but later opposed, repudiated, and adopted the Sunnī way.
Despite his innovation, Abū ʿAlī possessed vast learning and a nimble mind; he was the one who domesticated the science of kalām, making it easier and smoothing out its difficulties.
He would suspend judgment regarding Abū Bakr and ʿAlī: which of the two was superior?
