“That is what I expected of you—or rather, that is precisely the opinion I have always held of you.” (1)
Yazīd b. Muḥammad said: Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī related to us: ʿUmar b. Shabbah recited to us, on the authority of Abū Ghaziyyah:
Do not let a brother’s single slip
Turn your heart away from him;
A man is often cast aside
By those who stand the closest to him;
He is betrayed by confidants—
By those admitted to his inmost circle;
And death remains the gravest blow
That ever strikes the human frame.
