- al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān ibn ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Shaybānī, son of al-Nuʿmān ibn ʿAṭāʾ—the imām, Hadith Master, and thoroughly reliable authority; Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Shaybānī, the Khurasānī, al-Nasawī, compiler of the Musnad.
He was born in one of the years of the 280s AH, and he was older than his fellow townsman, the imām Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Nasāʾī; the two of them died in the same year.
He journeyed across many lands and transmitted ḥadith from: Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal; Ibrāhīm ibn Yūsuf al-Balkhī; Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd; Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn; Shaybān ibn Farrūkh; Hudbah ibn Khālid; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Asmāʾ; ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn Ḥammād; Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr al-Muqaddamī; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Sallām al-Jumaḥī; Sahl ibn ʿUthmān; Isḥāq ibn Rāhwayh; Saʿd ibn Yazīd al-Farrāʾ; Ḥibbān ibn Mūsā; Hishām ibn ʿAmmār; Ṣafwān ibn Ṣāliḥ; Ibrāhīm ibn Hishām ibn Yaḥyā al-Ghassānī; ʿĪsā ibn Ḥammād; Muḥammad ibn Rumḥ; Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥajjāj al-Sāmī; ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ghiyāth; Abū Kāmil al-Jaḥdarī; Suwayd ibn Saʿīd; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Muʿādh; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmmār—and many others besides.
He was a contemporary of Abū Yaʿlā, although Abū Yaʿlā’s chains of transmission are both higher and earlier than his.
