Al-Ḥākim Abū ʿAbd Allāh and other critics pronounced him reliable, though a few treated him with some leniency. He died toward the end of 302 AH. Ibn Bawsh (1) preserved a small section of his narrations. Another report says he passed away in 303 AH.
90 – The Lord of Khurāsān, Prince Abū Ibrāhīm Ismāʿīl son of the king Aḥmad ibn Asad ibn Sāmān ibn Nūḥ
He was a virtuous ruler—learned, accomplished in horsemanship, brave, of fortunate disposition, and greatly honoring the scholars. He was known by the title “the Resolute Emir.”
He studied under his own father and under Muḥammad ibn Naṣr al-Marwazī, from whom he heard the bulk of his works. Among those who transmitted from him were Ibn Khuzaymah and others.
Ibn Qāniʿ relates: I heard ʿĪsā ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭahmānī say, “I heard Prince Ismāʿīl recount: ‘Our father brought us a tutor who taught us al-rafḍ (Shiʿi rejectionism). I went to sleep and saw the Prophet ﷺ in a dream, with Abū Bakr and ʿUmar beside him. He said to me, “Why do you insult my two Companions?” I stood speechless. He then motioned with his hand and shook it toward my face; I awoke in a state of alarm.’”
