and the ibdāl reading in the year 313 AH; but his claim was exposed, for al-Mutarraz ﵀ had already died in Ṣafar 305 AH, when he was in his early nineties.
85 – Ṭarīf ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Mawṣilī *
The shaykh, Abū al-Walīd Ṭarīf ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Mawṣilī, a client of the Banū Hāshim.
He journeyed in search of knowledge and narrated from ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd, Yaḥyā ibn Bishr al-Ḥarīrī, and Yaḥyā al-Ḥimmanī.
Among those who reported from him were Abū Bakr al-Jiʿābī, Abū al-Fatḥ ibn Buraydah al-Azdī, Abū Aḥmad ibn ʿAdī, and others.

(1) The first category is illustrated by the Qurʾanic phrase raʾaytuhum li sajidin ("I saw them prostrating to me"); the second by ḥaythu shiʾtum raghadan ("eat therefrom plentifully wherever you wish"); and the third by turidu zinata al-hayat al-dunya ("you seek the adornment of the present life").
Ibdaal—in the reading of Abu Amr transmitted by al-Susi—consists in replacing a quiescent hamza with a long vowel, so yuʾminuna is read yuminuna, omitting the hamza. Abu Amr carries out this replacement throughout the Qurʾan except when the hamza’s sukun is due to jasm (the jussive) or to the imperative form. He also refrains from ibdaal in tuʾwi because the substitution is heavier than pronouncing the hamza itself; in riʾyan because it would create confusion with the form that lacks a hamza; and in muʾsada because the change would transfer the word from one dialect to another.
