  1. al-Mutarraz – Abū Bakr al-Qāsim ibn Zakariyya ibn Yahyā
The leading scholar, polymath, Qur’an reciter, ḥadith expert, and reliable authority: Abū Bakr al-Qāsim ibn Zakariyya ibn Yahyā al-Baghdadi, better known as al-Mutarraz.

He was born around 220 AH, or slightly earlier.

He studied Qur’an recitation with Abū Ḥamdūn al-Ṭayyib and Abū ʿUmar al-Dūrī.

He transmitted ḥadith from Suwayd ibn Saʿīd, Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ al-Jarjarāʾī, Isḥāq ibn Mūsā al-Anṣārī, Abū Hammām al-Walīd ibn Shujāʿ, Abū Kurayb, ʿAbbād ibn Yaʿqūb al-Rawājīnī, and others of their rank.

Among those who narrated from him were Abū Bakr al-Jiʿābī, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Jaʿfar al-Kharqī, Muḥammad ibn al-Muẓaffar, Abū Ḥafṣ al-Zayyāt, and many others.

He compiled a Musnad and other topical works, and he presided over classes in Qur’an recitation.

He was a trustworthy and dependable scholar; al-Dāraquṭnī and others spoke highly of him. ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Ghaḍāʾirī—a teacher of Abū ʿAlī al-Ahwāzī—reported that he completed a full khatma with him according to the major idghām (full assimilation) mode (1).

(1) *idgham* (assimilation) is the pronunciation of two consonants as a single sound identical to the second. The “major idgham,” attributed to Abu ʿAmr ibn al-Alaʾ al-Basri and transmitted by al-Susi, applies when the first of the two letters is vowelled, whether the letters are identical (*mithlayn*), of the same class (*jinsayn*), or merely close in articulation (*mutaqaribayn*). An example is the Quranic phrase wa-sh-shamsi wa-l-qamar (91:2).
