al-Farḥazānī—some pronounce it al-Farḥayānī.
He studied under Hishām ibn ʿAmmār, Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd, Abū Kurayb, Duḥaym, Muḥammad ibn Wazīr, Ḥarmalah ibn Yaḥyā, ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Shuʿayb, and others of their rank. He journeyed far and wide and acquired learning that proved highly beneficial.
Those who narrated from him include Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Naqqāsh—the Qur’an commentator—Abū Aḥmad ibn ʿAdī, Abū Bakr al-Ismāʿīlī, Bishr ibn Aḥmad al-Isfarāyinī, Abū ʿAmr ibn Ḥamdān, and a number of others.
Ibn ʿAdī said, “He was a travelling companion of al-Nasāʾī, had sharp insight into the transmitters, and ranked among the reliable authorities. I once asked him to dictate to me from Ḥarmalah, and he replied, ‘My son, what do you need with Ḥarmalah? He is weak.’ He then dictated to me three ḥadith from him and added nothing further.”
I read (this chain) before Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allāh and Zaynab bint ʿUmar, from ʿAbd al-Muʿizz ibn Muḥammad, who informed us: Zāhir ibn Ṭāhir informed us; Abū Saʿd al-Kanjurudhī informed us; Abū ʿAmr ibn Ḥamdān informed us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Sayyār al-Farḥazānī informed us; Hārūn ibn Zayd ibn Abī al-Zarqāʾ related to us; my father related to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Yaʿlā ibn ʿAtāʾ, from his father, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The pleasure of Allah is in the pleasure of the parent, and the Lord’s displeasure is in the parent’s displeasure.” (1)
