He was born sometime after 210 AH.
He transmitted ḥadīth from Muḥammad ibn Bakkār ibn al-Rayyān, ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn Ḥammād al-Narsī, Dāwūd ibn Rushayd, Abū Ibrāhīm al-Tarjumānī, Suwayd ibn Saʿīd, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abī al-Shawārib, Kathīr ibn ʿUbayd, ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān, Aḥmad ibn Manīʿ, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muṭīʿ, Ibn Abī ʿUmar al-ʿAdanī, and many others.
Those who narrated from him include al-Nasāʾī, Jaʿfar al-Khuldī, Abū Saʿīd ibn Yūnus, Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Tinnīsī al-Naqqāsh, Ibn ʿAdī, al-Ṭabarānī, al-Ḥasan ibn Rashīq, al-Ḥasan ibn Khaḍr al-Suyūṭī, Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Khayyāsh, and many others.
Ibn ʿAdī said: “Some of our colleagues informed me that al-Nasāʾī selected the material for his Musnad from Abū Yaʿqūb al-Minjaniqī. Consequently, Abū Yaʿqūb would not permit al-Nasāʾī to come to him; instead, he would go to al-Nasāʾī’s residence until the latter had heard from him all that he had chosen, seeking divine reward by doing so.”
He was a righteous shaykh. On one occasion al-Nasāʾī said to him, “O Abū Yaʿqūb, do not narrate from Sufyān ibn Wakīʿ.”
