Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Minister Ibn Ḥinzabah (1) related: “I heard Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Maʾmūnī, a close associate of al-Nasāʾī, say: ‘I heard some people reproaching Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Nasāʾī for writing the book al-Khaṣāʾiṣ on ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) while not producing a work on the merits of the two Shaykhs. I mentioned this to him, and he replied, “When I entered Damascus I found many people there harboring hostility toward ʿAlī, so I compiled al-Khaṣāʾiṣ in the hope that Allah, the Exalted, would guide them.”’

“Afterwards he authored The Merits of the Companions, and someone—while I was present—said to him, ‘Will you not also publish the virtues of Muʿāwiyah (may Allah be pleased with him)?’ He responded, ‘What should I include? The ḥadīth: ‘O Allah, do not satisfy his stomach’ (2)?’ At that, the questioner fell silent.”

And His words—“Your wives are a tilth for you” (2:223)—mean that they are like farmland you cultivate, and the place of cultivation is the front (the vagina). Anal intercourse, however, is forbidden. Whoever commits it unaware of the prohibition is simply told to stop; if he repeats it, he is subject to discretionary punishment. Al-Shafi‘i (2/360), Ahmad (2/213) and al-Tahawi (2/25) transmit, through Khuzayma b. Thabit, that the Prophet said: “Allah is not shy of the truth: do not approach women in their anuses.” The isnad is sound; Ibn Hibban (no. 1299) and Ibn al-Mulaqqin in Khulasat al-Badr al-Munir declared it authentic, and Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Bari (8/143) described it as having a reliable chain. Ahmad (2/244, 479), Abu Dawud (2162, Book of Marriage, chapter: A comprehensive chapter on marriage) and Ibn Majah (1923, Book of Marriage, chapter: The prohibition of approaching women in their anuses) also report—on the authority of Abu Hurayra—that the Messenger of Allah said: “Cursed is the one who comes to a woman from her anus.” Al-Busiri states in al-Zawaid (folio 125) that its chain is authentic. A corroborating narration appears with Ibn ‘Adi (3/421) and with al-Tabarani in al-Awsat, cited in Majma‘ (4/299), from ‘Uqba b. ‘Amir; its isnad is good, which strengthens the evidence. For additional sound hadiths on the prohibition of a man having anal intercourse with his wife, see Zad al-Ma‘ad 4/257 ff. and Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala 7/131. (1) Pronounced with a kasra on the initial h, a silent nun, then a zay, and—after the alif—an unvowelled single ba with fatha: hanzaba. In classical Arabic al-hanzaba denotes a short, stout woman; here it refers to Umm al-Fadl, daughter of Ja‘far b. al-Furat. See Wafayat al-A‘yan 1/349, 346. (2) This report is found in Musnad al-Tayalisi, no. 2688, through the chain Abu ‘Awana – Abu Hamza al-Qassab – Ibn ‘Abbas: the Messenger of Allah sent for Mu‘awiya to write something for him. He was told, “He is eating.” The Prophet sent again and was told, “He is eating.” The Messenger of Allah then said: “No …”
