the note of the mustamli states that he heard this from Aḥmad ibn Hārūn al-Bardijī in the Mosque of al-Dhuhlī in 255 AH. Our own teacher, Abū ʿAlī the ḥadith-master, also heard from him in Mecca, and I think he remained there as a permanent resident until he died … until he said: “I do not know of any leading scholar of his time, in any region, who did not select narrations from him and profit thereby.”
Ḥamzah al-Sahmī said: “I asked al-Dāraquṭnī about Abū Bakr al-Bardijī, and he replied, ‘Reliable, trustworthy, a mountain.’”
And al-Khaṭīb (1) said: “He was reliable, virtuous, intelligent, a ḥadith master.”
Abū Shaykh al-Aṣbahānī said: “He died in 301 AH in Baghdad.”
Aḥmad ibn Kāmil said: “He died in the month of Ramaḍān, in 301 AH.”
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad the jurist and Muslim ibn Muḥammad the scribe wrote to us, saying:
“ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad the schoolmaster narrated to us; Hibat Allāh ibn al-Ḥuṣayn narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Shāfiʿī narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Hārūn al-Bardijī narrated to us; Yazīd ibn Jahwar narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal narrated to us; al-Shāfiʿī narrated to us; Muslim ibn Khālid informed us, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, that the Prophet ﷺ ruled: ‘The yield belongs to the one who bears the liability.’ (2)
This is a fair (ḥasan), singular (gharīb) hadith.”
