63 – Musaddad ibn Qaṭan ibn Ibrāhīm, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Naysābūrī
An imam, authoritative traditionist, trusted and exemplary worshipper, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Naysābūrī was known as “the certifier” (al-muzakkī).
He heard hadith from Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā al-Naysābūrī but never narrated from him, for he had only attended him while still a youth and therefore abstained from transmitting his reports. He also heard from his maternal grandfather Bishr ibn al-Ḥakam, from Isḥāq ibn Rāhwayh, Dāwūd ibn Rushayd, al-Ṣalt ibn Masʿūd al-Jaḥdarī, Abū Muṣʿab al-Zuhrī, and their peers.
Those who transmitted from Musaddad include Abū Ḥāmid ibn al-Sharqī, Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ ibn Hāniʾ, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Saʿd, Daʿlaj al-Sijzī, ʿAlī ibn ʿĪsā, Abū al-Walīd Ḥassān ibn Muḥammad the jurist, and others.
From among his own contemporaries, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Sarrāj also narrated from him.
Al-Ḥākim said: “He was the foremost certifier of his time, unrivalled in asceticism, scrupulous piety, and depth of knowledge.”
