The ʿUmrah of al-Jiʿrānah
Hammām narrated from Qatādah, from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed four ʿumra, all of them in Dhu al-Qaʿdah except the one that accompanied his Hajj: the ʿumrah during—or, he said, from—al-Hudaybiyah in Dhu al-Qaʿdah; an ʿumrah, which I think he said took place the following year; the ʿumrah from al-Jiʿrānah, where he distributed the spoils of Hunayn, likewise in Dhu al-Qaʿdah; and the ʿumrah he performed together with his Hajj. Agreed upon.
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah relates, in the Maghāzī of ʿUrwah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the state of ʿumrah at al-Jiʿrānah during Dhu al-Qaʿdah, came to Mecca, and completed his ʿumrah. When he had set out for Hunayn he had appointed Muʿādh over Mecca, instructing him to teach them the Qurʾān and to give them understanding of the religion. He then returned to Medina, leaving Muʿādh in charge of the people of Mecca.
Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ travelled from al-Jiʿrānah in the state of ʿumrah and ordered that the remainder of the booty (fayʾ) be kept at Majinnah. When he had completed his ʿumrah he returned to Medina, appointing ʿAttāb ibn Usayd as governor over Mecca and leaving Muʿādh with him to instruct the people.
I [the author] say: ʿAttāb remained governor of Mecca until he died there on the same day that Abū Bakr passed away. He was ʿAttāb ibn Usayd ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ ibn Umayyah of the Umayyad clan. It has reached us that the Prophet ﷺ said to him, “ʿAttāb, do you know over whom I have appointed you? I have appointed you over the people of Allah …”
