of it, it is yours.”
The man answered, “If matters have reached that point, then I want nothing to do with it,” and he threw it away.
Ayyūb narrated—through Nāfiʿ—from Ibn ʿUmar that ʿUmar once asked the Prophet ﷺ at al-Jiʿrānah: “During the Age of Ignorance I vowed to spend a day in retreat in the Sacred Mosque.” The Prophet said, “Go and fulfill your retreat.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had already given him a slave-girl from the one-fifth share; but when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ later set the captives free, ʿUmar said, “ʿAbd Allāh, go to that slave-girl and release her.” Muslim recorded this report.
Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū Wajzah al-Saʿdī told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ allotted to ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib a slave-girl from the Hawāzin captives, and likewise to ʿUthmān and ʿUmar; ʿUmar subsequently gave his to his son.
Ibn Isḥāq further related—through Nāfiʿ from Ibn ʿUmar—who said: “I sent my slave-girl to my maternal uncles of Banū Jumāḥ so they could prepare her for me while I circumambulated the House. When I left the Mosque I saw people rushing about. I asked, ‘What is going on?’ They said, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has returned our women to us.’ I replied, ‘Your woman is with Banū Jumāḥ,’ so they went and retrieved her.”
Ibn Isḥāq also reported, on the authority of Abū Wajzah Yazīd ibn ʿUbayd, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to the delegation of Hawāzin, “What has become of Mālik ibn ʿAwf?” They answered, “He is in al-Ṭāʾif.” He said, “Tell him that if he comes to me as a Muslim, I will restore to him his family and his property and will grant him 100 camels.” When the message reached Mālik, he left al-Ṭāʾif and came to the Prophet.
