and by the leading ḥuffāẓ; al-Ṭabarānī, moreover, preserved a large body of material on his authority. Al-Khaṭīb (1) said: “He died in 294 AH.”
51 – al-Barāthī, Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Khālid
The imām, Qur’an reciter, ḥadīth scholar, and master of precise rendition: Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Khālid al-Baghdādī, known as al-Barāthī.
He studied Qur’anic recitation with Khalaf ibn Hishām and was the last of his disciples.
He heard ḥadīth from ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd, Kāmil ibn Ṭalḥa, Surayj ibn Yūnus, and others of their generation.
ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Abī Hāshim learnt the variant readings (ḥurūf) from him; al-Barāthī was the most senior teacher he ever met.
Those who transmitted from al-Barāthī include Makhlad al-Bāqarḥī, al-Jiʿābī, al-Ṭabarānī, Aḥmad ibn Jaʿfar al-Khuttulī (2), Abū Ḥafṣ ibn al-Zayyāt, and several others.
Al-Dāraqutnī said, “Trustworthy and reliable.”
I say: He died in 300 AH.
In that same year also passed away Aḥwaṣ ibn al-Mufaḍḍal al-Ghalābī, ʿAlī ibn Saʿīd al-ʿAskarī, Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Samāʿah, Abū ʿUmar Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Qattāt, al-Ḥusayn ibn Abī al-Aḥwaṣ al-Thaqafī, and Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿIqāl al-Ḥarrānī.
