Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī related to us; Jaʿfar ibn Munīr related to us; al-Silafī related to us; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār related to us; Abu Yaʿlā al-Khalīlī the ḥāfiẓ related to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad the ḥāfiẓ said: I heard Aḥmad ibn Ṭāhir the ḥāfiẓ say, I heard Saʿīd ibn ʿAmr the ḥāfiẓ say:
“When I returned from Egypt, I stayed once more with Abū Zurʿah. I presented to him the book of al-Muzanī, and whenever I read a passage in which al-Muzanī differed from al-Shāfiʿī, he would just smile and remark: ‘Your companion has accomplished nothing with these personal preferences of his; he cannot disengage himself from the very position he claims.’”
I asked, “Did you ever hear anything directly from al-Muzanī?”
He replied, “No; I only sat with him for two days.”
