Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Among those who transmitted from him were: Jaʿfar al-Khuldī, Abū Muḥammad al-Jarīrī, Abū Bakr al-Shiblī, Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Ḥubaysh, ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn ʿIlwān, and a number of others.

Ibn al-Munādī said: “He heard a great deal of hadith, kept company with the righteous and the people of spiritual insight, and was granted keen intelligence and sound judgment.

No one of his time was his equal in chastity and indifference to the world.

I was told that he once said, ‘I used to issue legal opinions in the study-circle of Abū Thawr al-Kalbī when I was twenty years old.’”

Aḥmad ibn ʿAṭāʾ likewise said: “Al-Junayd gave fatwas in the circle of Abū Thawr.”

Al-Junayd himself said: “There is not a single field of knowledge that God has brought down to earth and opened a path to for His servants except that He has allotted me a share in it.”

It was also reported that while attending to his shop he performed three hundred rakʿahs each day, along with thousands upon thousands of tasbīḥs.

Abū Nuʿaym narrates: ʿAlī ibn Hārūn and another transmitter told us: “We heard al-Junayd more than once say, ‘Our discipline is regulated by the Book and the Sunnah. Whoever has not memorized the Book, recorded the hadith, and studied jurisprudence is not to be taken as a model.’”

ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn ʿIlwān said: “I heard al-Junayd say, ‘Our knowledge—meaning taṣawwuf—is interwoven with the hadith of the Messenger of God.’”

Abū al-ʿAbbās ibn Surayj once delivered a discourse that amazed his listeners, and he explained, “It is the blessing of my keeping company with Abū al-Qāsim al-Junayd.”

Abū al-Qāsim al-Kaʿbī likewise remarked on one occasion: “I saw for you in Baghdad a shaykh named al-Junayd—my eyes have never beheld anyone like him! The scribes—that is, the eloquent rhetoricians—used to attend his gatherings…”
