—the rest of the narration; al-Bukhari has transmitted it.
Aqīl reported from Ibn Shihāb who said that ʿUrwah related to me: Marwān and al-Miswar ibn Makhramah informed me that when the delegation of Hawāzin arrived as Muslims, asking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to return their property and their womenfolk, he stood up and said, “The people you see with me have a share in this matter, and the statement dearest to me is the truest one. Choose, therefore, either the captives or the wealth, for I had already waited for your coming.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had in fact delayed nineteen nights after returning from Ṭāʾif awaiting them. When they realized that he would restore to them only one of the two, they declared, “We choose our captives.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then rose among the Muslims, praised Allah as is His due, and said, “To proceed: These brothers of yours have come to us repentant, and I have resolved to return to them their captives. Whoever among you is pleased to forgo his share may do so; and whoever prefers to keep his portion until we compensate him from the first booty that Allah grants us, may do so.” The people replied, “We gladly relinquish our shares for them, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “We do not know who has consented and who has not, so return to your camps and let your leaders convey your decision to us.” The people withdrew, their leaders canvassed them, and they came back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to inform him that all had willingly agreed. Al-Bukhari recorded this as well.
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah added: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then traveled from Ṭāʾif to al-Jiʿrānah, where the captives were held. The delegations of Hawāzin came to him there as Muslims—nine of their chiefs among them. They embraced Islam, pledged allegiance, and then spoke to him about those who had been taken captive, saying, “O Messenger of Allah, among those seized are mothers, sisters, paternal and maternal aunts—women whose captivity brings disgrace upon their clans. We appeal to Allah and to you.” The Prophet ﷺ was ever compassionate, generous, and noble, so he said, “I shall seek that for you.”
