He heard from ʿAmr ibn Khālid al-Harrānī, from Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr—he copied the Muwaṭṭaʾ from him—Yūsuf ibn ʿAdī, and Hishām ibn ʿAmmār.
Among those who transmitted from him are Muḥammad ibn al-ʿAbbās ibn al-Waṣīf; al-Ḥasan ibn Marwān al-Qaysarānī; Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Naqqāsh, the ḥadith master; Abū ʿUmar ibn Faḍālah; ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad al-Maqdisī; the ḥadith master Abū ʿAlī al-Naysābūrī; and others.
He lived until the year 301 AH.
Al-Ḥākim said: “I asked Abū ʿAlī the ḥadith master about al-Ḥasan ibn al-Faraj, and he replied, ‘We witnessed nothing but good from him; we read the Muwaṭṭaʾ to him from his own autograph copy.’”
I (the author) add: Ibn ʿAsākir mentioned him but did not elaborate.
