Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

so he gave al-Aqraʿ one hundred camels, and the same amount to ʿUyaynah. He also granted portions to several of the Arab nobles, giving them precedence that day. Thereupon a man exclaimed, “By Allah, this is a distribution in which no justice was observed, nor was the face of Allah sought!” I said, “By Allah, I shall inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” I went to him and told him what had been said. His face changed until it became crimson, and he declared, “Who will act justly if Allah and His Messenger do not?” He then added, “May Allah have mercy on Moses; he was hurt with far worse than this, yet he remained patient.” I said to myself, “Never again will I convey such reports to him.” Agreed upon.

Al-Layth narrated—from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir—who said: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ at al-Jiʿrānah while he was dividing the spoils on his return from Ḥunayn. In Bilāl’s cloak lay some silver, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taking from it and giving to the people. The man said, “O Muḥammad, be fair.” He replied, “Woe to you! Who will be fair if I am not? You are ruined and lost if I am not fair.” ʿUmar said, “Let me strike the neck of this hypocrite, O Messenger of Allah.” He replied, “Never! Lest people say that I kill my Companions. This man and his fellows recite the Quran but it does not pass their throats; they will dart out of the religion as an arrow darts through its quarry.” Recorded by Muslim.

Shuʿayb narrated—from al-Zuhrī, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī—who said: While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he was distributing some property, Dhu al-Khuwayṣirah al-Tamīmī came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, be just.” He answered, “Woe to you! Who will be just if I am not? You are ruined and lost if I am not just.” ʿUmar said, “Give me permission, O Messenger of Allah, to strike off his head.” He replied, “Leave him; for he will have followers of whom any one of you would belittle his own prayer compared with theirs and his own fasting compared with theirs. They recite the Quran, yet it does not go beyond their collarbones; they will shoot out of Islam as an arrow shoots through the prey.” He then mentioned
