Al-Ḥākim said: “He was the leading shaykh of his clan in his day, one of the most reliable and meticulous authorities, and he belonged to the foremost circle of Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā, Isḥāq ibn Rāhwayh, ʿAmr ibn Zurārah, Muḥammad ibn Rāfiʿ, Abū ʿAmmār al-Marwazī, Muḥammad ibn Abān al-Mustamlī, and their peers.
Among those who narrated from him were Abū ʿAmr al-Ḥayrī, al-Muʾammal ibn al-Ḥasan, Abū Ḥāmid ibn al-Sharqī, Abū al-Faḍl ibn Ibrāhīm, ʿAbd Allah ibn Saʿd, and Abū al-Walīd the jurist.
Abū al-Walīd heard him say: “Isḥāq al-Ḥanẓalī used to single me out above a group of shaykhs in his gathering and would say, ‘Their forefather was the first to make the Sunnah manifest in Khurāsān.’”
Al-Ḥākim also said: “I heard Abū ʿAbd Allah Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb on more than one occasion say, ‘Whenever I possess a ḥadīth transmitted by Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad to Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā, I feel no need to cite it through anyone else, for Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā used to visit the house of al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿUbayd Allah every Friday after the congregational prayer. They would bring their children forward to him, and he would pray for them.’”
Al-Ḥākim further said: “I heard Abū al-Faḍl Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm say, ‘Jaʿfar al-Turk died on Saturday and was buried on Sunday, 18 Shaʿbān 295 AH.’”
Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Zubayr, Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf, and Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad related to us, saying: ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān the ḥāfiẓ informed us; Manṣūr ibn ʿAbd al-Munʿim informed us; Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl informed us; Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥusayn the ḥāfiẓ informed us; Abū ʿAbd Allah the ḥāfiẓ informed us; Yaḥyā ibn Manṣūr dictated to us; Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us: “I read before Mālik, from Ibn Shihāb, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—would perform ghusl, the ritual bath, from a single vessel—the faraq—when in a state of janābah (major ritual impurity).”
