al-Junūjirdī—and Junūjird (1) is one of the villages of Marw.
His given name was ʿAbd Allah. He was among those who made the Shāfiʿī school public in Khurasan, and after Imām Aḥmad ibn Sayyār he was the authority to whom people turned for fatwas and difficult legal questions.
Aḥmad had brought al-Shāfiʿī’s books to Marw, and the people were greatly impressed by them. ʿAbdān wanted to copy them, but Aḥmad would not lend them to him. So ʿAbdān sold an estate he owned in Junūjird, travelled to Egypt, and there obtained the books in full—indeed, even more than that. Later Aḥmad ibn Sayyār came in to greet him, offer congratulations, and apologize. ʿAbdān replied, “Do not apologize, for you have done me a favor in this. Had you given me the books, I would never have travelled to Egypt.”
Abū Nuʿaym ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad al-Ghifārī said: “ʿAbdān also died on the night of ʿArafa—just as he had been born on it—in the year 293 AH.”
Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb (2) said: “He was trustworthy, a ḥadith memorizer, righteous, and ascetic.”
