Abū ʿAmr Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq ibn Jabalah al-Samarqandī said, “ʿAbdūs, the ḥadīth master, died in Samarqand in 282 AH.”
Others stated that he passed away in Shaʿbān of 283 AH.
In that same year—and some said in the one that followed—there also died the foremost poet of his age, Abū ʿUbādah al-Walīd ibn ʿUbayd ibn Yaḥyā al-Ṭāʾī al-Buḥturī (1) of Manbij, author of the celebrated Dīwān.
4 – Ṣabāḥ ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Faḍl al-Mursī *
A jurist, ḥadīth scholar, centenarian, and the leading transmitter of his time in al-Andalus; known as Abū al-Ghuṣn al-ʿUtaqī, the Andalusian from Murcia.
He narrated from Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā, Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr, Aṣbagh ibn al-Faraj, Abū Muṣʿab al-Zuhrī, Saḥnūn, and many others.
He lived to an advanced age.
Among those who transmitted from him were Ḥafṣ ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥafṣ and others.
Ibn al-Faraḍī (2) said: “He met Aṣbagh ibn al-Faraj in Egypt, listened to him, stayed with him for a time, and then returned home. People would journey to him to hear ḥadīth and to study jurisprudence.”
He added, “I have been informed that he died at the age of one hundred and eighteen, on the tenth of Muḥarram, 294 AH.”
