Al-Ḥākim said, “Al-Aṣamm narrated to us; al-Ṣaghānī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; al-Nufaylī narrated to us…”—and he reported a ḥadīth. He then added, “Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar transmitted it to us; al-Būshanjī narrated to us…,” and he cited the same report.
We were informed—by reading to them—by Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Salām al-Tamīmī, instructor of the Shāmiyya (1); Abū al-Faḍl ibn Tāj al-Umanāʾ (2); and Zaynab bint Kindī (3), from al-Muʾayyad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī, ʿAbd al-Muʿizz ibn Muḥammad al-Harawī, and Zaynab bint Abī al-Qāsim al-Shaʿrī.
Al-Muʾayyad said: “Muḥammad ibn al-Faḍl al-Ṣāʿidī informed us.”
ʿAbd al-Muʿizz said: “Tamīm ibn Abī Saʿīd al-Muʿallim informed us.”
Zaynab said: “Ismāʿīl ibn Abī al-Qāsim informed us.” They went on to relate:
“ʿUmar ibn Aḥmad ibn Masrūr informed us; Abū ʿAmr ibn Nujayd informed us in the year 364 AH; Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Būshanjī narrated to us; Rawḥ ibn Ṣalāḥ al-Miṣrī narrated to us; Mūsā ibn ʿAlī—through his father—from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who said:
‘Envy is [allowed] only in two cases: a man to whom Allah has given the Qurʾan, so he upholds it, declaring its lawful to be lawful and its unlawful to be unlawful; and a man to whom Allah has given wealth, and he maintains his relatives and kin with it and acts in obedience to Allah—one may wish to be like him. And whoever possesses four qualities will not be harmed by whatever of this world is withheld from him: good character, chastity, truthfulness in speech, and fidelity to trusts.’ (4)
