He was also counted among the leading figures of the Marwazis.

Al-Ḥākim said: My father narrated to us; he heard al-Ṭahmānī say, “I saw in Khwarizm a woman who neither ate nor drank, nor did she pass any waste.”

His son, Abū Ṣāliḥ Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā, said: “My father died in Ṣafar of the year 293 AH.”

Yaḥyā al-ʿAnbarī reported: “I heard al-Ṭahmānī recount the case of that woman who neither ate nor drank; she lived in that condition for a little over twenty years, and he had personally witnessed it.”

I have set out her story in my Tārīkh al-Islām (History of Islam). She was Rahma bint Ibrāhīm. Her husband had been killed, leaving her with two sons. Destitute, she fell asleep one day while fasting and saw her husband among the martyrs, eating at spread tables. She said: “I asked their permission to eat, and they handed me a morsel. I tasted it and found it sweeter than anything else; I awoke fully satiated and have remained so ever since.”

This report is authentic; glory be to the One who has power over all things.

Shaykh ʿIzz al-Dīn al-Fārūthī related that after the year 600 AH there was a man in Iraq who passed several years without eating.

Trustworthy sources also informed me of ʿĀʾisha “the Fasting One” in al-Andalus; she was still alive in the year 700 AH and likewise spent years without taking any food.
