of the Fire, and that is what I did.”
The Prophet ﷺ replied, “You lied; rather, you said such-and-such.” He admitted, “You have spoken the truth, O Messenger of Allah; I repent to Allah and to you.”
Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz al-Muqriʾ informed us in 692 AH, together with Muhammad ibn Abī al-Ḥazam, Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī, Muhammad ibn Abī al-Fatḥ al-Shaybānī, Muhammad ibn Aḥmad al-ʿAqīlī, Muhammad ibn Yūsuf al-Dhahabī, and others. They all said: Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Muhammad al-Sakhāwī informed us.
Another chain: ʿAbd al-Muʿṭī ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān in Alexandria informed us, saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Makkī informed us.
Yet another chain: Luʾluʾ al-Muḥsanī in Egypt, ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad, ʿAlī ibn Muhammad—the two Ḥanbalis—and others informed us, saying: Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Hibat Allāh, the jurist, informed us; they added: Abū Ṭāhir Aḥmad ibn Muhammad ibn Salafah, the ḥadith master, informed us; he said: Abū al-Ḥasan Makkī ibn Manṣūr al-Karajī informed us.
I also read this before Sunqur al-Qaḍāʾī in Aleppo, who said: “ʿAbd al-Laṭīf ibn Yūsuf conveys it to you.” I later heard it, in 692 AH, from ʿĀʾishah bint ʿĪsā ibn al-Muwafaq, who said: “My grandfather Abū Muhammad ibn Qudāmah narrated to us in 614 AH, in person, saying: Abū Zurʿah Ṭāhir ibn Muhammad al-Maqdisī informed us; he said: Muhammad ibn Aḥmad al-Sāwī narrated to us in 487 AH; both said: Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Qāḍī narrated to us; he said: Abū al-ʿAbbās Muhammad ibn Yaʿqūb told us; he said: Zakarīyyā ibn Yaḥyā al-Marwazī in Baghdad narrated to us; he said: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah related to us, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from Abū al-ʿAbbās, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with them—who said:
“The Prophet ﷺ besieged the people of al-Taʾif but gained no advantage over them. He then announced, ‘We shall withdraw tomorrow, Allah willing.’ The Muslims protested, ‘Are you going to leave without having taken the fortress?’ So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘March out to fight tomorrow morning.’ They went and suffered wounds. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, ‘We are…’
