Among those who fell as martyrs at Ḥunayn were: Ayman ibn ʿUbayd, the son of Umm Ayman and freedman of Banū Hāshim; Yazīd ibn Zamʿah ibn al-Aswad al-Asadī al-Qurashī; Suraqah ibn Ḥabāb ibn ʿAdī al-ʿAjlānī al-Anṣārī; and Abū ʿĀmir ʿUbayd al-Ashʿarī.
Afterwards the spoils were gathered, and Masʿūd ibn ʿAmr was placed in charge of them; they were not to be apportioned until after the affair of al-Ṭāʾif.
The Expedition to al-Ṭāʾif
From Ḥunayn the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for al-Ṭāʾif in the month of Shawwāl, appointing Khālid ibn al-Walīd to lead the vanguard. Thaqīf had already fortified their citadel and stocked it with provisions sufficient for a year. When they had been routed at Awtās they withdrew into the fortress and prepared for battle.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then turned back until he reached al-Jiʿrānah and said, “I intend to perform ʿumrah.”
Ibn Luhayʿah—on the authority of Abū al-Aswad, from ʿUrwah—and Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ʿUqbah—from his uncle Mūsā—likewise relate: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ marched to al-Ṭāʾif, leaving the captives at al-Jiʿrānah, and the canopies of Mecca were filled with them. He encamped on a rise near the fortress of al-Ṭāʾif for several-teen nights, fighting the enemy while Thaqīf showered arrows upon the Muslims, causing many wounds.
