Abū Yaʿlā ibn al-Farrāʾ said: “I found on the back of a book transmitted by Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Sūsanjardī from Ismāʿīl al-Khuṭabī that it had reached me, from Abū Zurʿah, that he said: Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said to me, ‘My son ʿAbd Allāh is especially fortunate in the science of hadith’—al-Khuṭabī is doubtful about the exact wording—‘for he scarcely ever discusses a report with me except one I have not already memorized.’ (2)
Abū ʿAlī ibn al-Ṣawwāf reported that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said: “Everything concerning which I say, ‘My father said,’ I have heard from him twice or three times, and at the very least once.”
