248 – ʿAbd Allah ibn Ubay al-Khwarazmi * (Kh. (1))

He was the qadi of Khwarazm and its foremost hadith authority, a well-traveled hadith master.

He heard hadith from Ahmad ibn Yunus al-Yarbūʿī, Saʿid ibn Mansur, Sulayman ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman, Isḥaq ibn Rahwayh, Qutaybah ibn Saʿid, and their peers.

Among those who transmitted from him were al-Bukhari, Muḥammad ibn ʿAli al-Sani al-Ḥassani al-Khwarazmi, and Abu al-ʿAbbas ibn Ḥamdan al-Ḥiri; the last two are counted among the teachers of al-Barqani.

Al-Bukhari also narrated from Ibn Abi in his work al-Duʿafāʾ, both with full chains and in suspended form, for he passed through Khwarazm and stayed with this man. Thus al-Bukhari’s wording in the Ṣaḥīḥ, “ḥaddathanā ʿAbd Allah, ḥaddathanā Sulayman ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman …,” after which he cites a report (2), refers to ʿAbd Allah ibn Ubay (3).

(2) The complete text reads: “Musa ibn Harun and others related to us: al-Walid ibn Muslim told us, ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Ala ibn Zabar told us, who said: Busr ibn Ubayd Allah narrated to me, who said: Abu Idris al-Khawlani narrated to me, who said: I heard Abu al-Darda’ say: ‘There was a discussion between Abu Bakr and Umar. Abu Bakr provoked Umar, so Umar left him in anger. Abu Bakr followed him, asking him to seek forgiveness for him, but Umar refused until he shut his door in Abu Bakr’s face. Abu Bakr then went to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, while we were with him. The Messenger of Allah said, “As for your companion, he has certainly been reckless.” Umar regretted what he had done; he came, greeted, sat with the Prophet, and told him what had happened. Abu al-Darda’ continued: The Messenger of Allah became angry, while Abu Bakr kept saying, “By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, it was I who was more in the wrong.” The Messenger of Allah then said, “Will you people not leave my companion alone? Will you not leave my companion alone? I said, ‘O people, I am the Messenger of Allah to you all,’ and you answered, ‘You lie,’ whereas Abu Bakr said, ‘You speak the truth.’”’ Recorded by al-Bukhari, 8/228, in the commentary on Surat al-Araf, chapter: “And fear Him that you may be guided.” I recall having read a commentary on this hadith long ago in Al-Azhar Magazine by Shaykh Taha al-Sakkat, who entitled it “The Dispute of the Notables,” a remarkably apt title. (3) Al-Hafiz differs in Fath al-Bari, 8/228, and in the Introduction, p. 227, where he writes: “Thus it appears without attribution …”
