Abu ʿAbd Allah Ibn al-Akhram said: “After Muslim b. al-Hajjāj, the people of ḥadīth gathered around Abu ʿAli; he became their focal point.”
Muḥammad b. Ṣāliḥ b. Hāniʾ said: “I heard al-Ḥusayn al-Qabbānī say, ‘I narrated to al-Bukhārī a report from Surayj b. Yunus. Later I looked in the notebook of one of the students and found that he had written: he heard it from al-Bukhārī, on my authority.’ (1)”
Ibn al-Akhram said: “I heard Abu ʿAli al-Qabbānī—when he was asked about Muḥammad b. Qays, the shaykh of Abu Maʿshar—reply, ‘He is the father of Abu Zukayr.’ ”
Al-Ḥākim said: “I heard al-Ḥusayn b. Yaʿqūb relate that he had heard al-Qabbānī say, ‘Abu al-Zaʿrāʾ the elder is ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb; Abu al-Zaʿrāʾ al-Jumashī is ʿAmr b. ʿAmr—though some say ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir—who narrates from his uncle Abu al-Aḥwaṣ; and Abu al-Zaʿrāʾ Yaḥyā b. al-Walīd al-Ṭāʾī is a Kufan from whom Ibn Mahdī transmits.’ ”
I say: A fourth bearer of the kunya “Abu al-Zaʿrāʾ” is ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbdus, the Qurʾān-reciter and disciple of al-Dūrī; and a fifth is Muḥammad b. ʿAbdus b. Kāmil al-Sarrāj, a companion of ʿAlī b. al-Jaʿd.
Al-Ḥākim said: “I heard ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAlī al-Ḥaḍramī say: ‘My grandfather al-Ḥusayn b. Muḥammad died in the year 289 AH.’ It is also said that Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Būshanjī led the funeral prayer over him.”
