who said, “I heard al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad al-Qabbānī say:
‘Muḥammad ibn Bashshār narrated to us; Yaḥyā narrated to us…’
When he had finished he asked, ‘Do you know from whom I have just related this to you?’
They replied, ‘You have related it to us from Bundār, from Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān.’
He said, ‘No, by Allah! Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Bashshār narrated it to us; Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā narrated it to us.’
Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Salām passed away in Ramadan of the year 286 AH. Thus he coincided with the one before him in personal name, father’s name, reliability of memory, year of death, and even in the names of their two shaykhs—al-Laythī and al-Tamīmī. Allah knows best.
In that same year there also died: Aḥmad ibn Salamah al-Naysābūrī (1); Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī al-Khazzāz (2); the Shaykh of the Sufis, Abū Saʿīd al-Khazzāz (3); Aḥmad ibn al-Muʿallā al-Dimashqī (4); Ibrāhīm ibn Suwayd al-Shāmī; his companion Ibrāhīm ibn Barra al-Ṣanʿānī (5); their companion al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā al-Bawsī (6), all disciples of ʿAbd al-Razzāq; ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn al-Barqī (7), the transmitter of the Sīra; ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Baghawī (8) in Mecca; Muḥammad ibn Waḍḍāḥ al-Qurṭubī (9); Muḥammad ibn Yūnus al-Kudaymī (10); the ascetic Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Bannāʾ; and Abū ʿUbāda.
