Ishāq ibn Mūsā al-Isfarāʾīnī narrated to us; he said: Isḥāq narrated to us; Jarīr informed us, from Mughīra, from al-Shaʿbī, who said:
“The first man ever to deliver a sermon while seated was Muʿāwiya, and that was when his belly had grown large and his flesh had increased.”
I (the author) say: This Ibn Abī ʿImrān lived for roughly seventy years and was counted among the reliable imams. I once imagined that he was the father of Abū ʿAwānah, but the name of Abū ʿAwānah’s father is Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Yazīd al-Isfarāʾīnī.
He narrated from Isḥāq ibn Rāhwayh, Ibn Ḥujr, and Abū Marwān al-ʿUthmānī.
The one who relates most frequently from him is his son Abū ʿAwānah in his Ṣaḥīḥ. Yet I have not found any report of Abū ʿAwānah from Isḥāq ibn Abī ʿImrān, nor does al-Ḥākim record a biographical entry for Abū ʿAwānah’s father in his History. For this reason I initially thought the two might be one and the same person, for both belong to the same scholarly stratum.
Ahmad ibn Hibat Allāh informed us (1) through al-Qāsim ibn Abī Saʿd; Abū al-Asʿad al-Qushayrī informed us; ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Baḥīrī informed us; Abū Nuʿaym ʿAbd al-Malik ibn al-Ḥasan narrated to us; Abū ʿAwānah narrated, saying: My father told me:
‘Abū Marwān Muḥammad ibn ʿUthmān narrated to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muḥammad narrated, from Ibn al-Hād, from Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Taymī, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, who said he heard the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—say:
“The Fire said, ‘My Lord! Parts of me have consumed others.’ So He granted it two breaths …” (2) — and the ḥadith continues.'
