225 – al-Qarāṭīsī, Abū Yazīd Yūsuf ibn Yazīd al-Miṣrī * (S (1))
The Imām, reliable transmitter and senior musnid: Abū Yazīd, Yūsuf ibn Yazīd ibn Kāmil ibn Ḥakīm, the Umayyad Egyptian known as al-Qarāṭīsī, a client of the governor of Egypt ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Marwān.
He heard ḥadith from Asad ibn Mūsā al-Sunnah, Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ the scribe, Ḥajjāj ibn Ibrāhīm al-Azraq, and several others.
He was a learned scholar, both prolific and exacting.
Among those who narrated from him were ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar ibn al-Ward, ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Wāʿiẓ, Sulaymān ibn Aḥmad al-Ṭabarānī, and others. It is also said that al-Nasāʾī transmitted from him.
Ibn Yūnus declared him reliable. He lived to an advanced age and met al-Shāfiʿī.
The ḥāfiẓ Aḥmad ibn Khālid al-Jabbāb said: “Abū Yazīd is among the most trustworthy people. I have never seen anyone like him, and I have not met a single person who was not somehow criticized—except him and Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb al-ʿAllāf.” Aḥmad al-Jabbāb thus held al-Qarāṭīsī in very high esteem.
He died—according to Ibn Yūnus—in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of 287 AH.
