He thereupon bestowed upon him five hundred dinars. The man exclaimed, “O king, increase it for me!” So he turned to the pages and said, “Throw your swords and belts down for him.”
His realm extended from Nubia to the Euphrates.
When al-Muʿtaḍid came to power, Khumārawayh hastened to present him with lavish gifts, and al-Muʿtaḍid married his daughter. It is said that he meant thereby to impoverish him through the cost of her trousseau.
It is also related that his own mamluks (1) killed him for an act of lewdness, in Dhū’l-Ḥijjah of the year 282 AH at Dayr Murrān, after which their heads were struck off.
- al-Sarakhsī, Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad ibn al-Ṭayyib
The philosopher, consummate scholar, and prolific author, Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad ibn al-Ṭayyib,
= "atlaftu" (I have destroyed/wasted it).
The rest of the narrative says: “Abu al-Jaysh turned to the servant who was carrying the purse and said, ‘Empty it.’ The purse held 500 dinars, so the servant poured them into his cloak. The man then said, ‘O King, add to it.’ The king turned to the pages and ordered, ‘Throw your swords and belts on him.’ They did so. The man exclaimed, ‘O King, you have burdened me!’ The king replied, ‘Give him a mule to carry it.’ When he left, the king instructed me to give each page who had thrown his sword and belt a sword and belt of gold. We had them made and handed over to them.”

Dayr Maran is mentioned in al-Qalaid al-Jawhariyya fi Tarikh al-Salihiyya, 1/44–48 (Academy of Arabic Language, Damascus, 1980): “Its site today is on the slope below Qubbat Siyar and above the Dawwasa orchard, overlooking al-Rabwa and its delightful gardens… The area was given this name because of a monastery called Dayr Maran. Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani mentions it in al-Aghani, describing it as a monastery on a high knoll beneath which lie meadows and pleasant streams…”
Poets of old sang of Dayr Maran, its beauty and wholesome air. The poet al-Babbagha says:
O radiant morning at Dayr Maran, so graceful—
you have stirred our hearts and eyes;
A gentle breeze set out toward you
and raised within you a pavilion of perfume.
