Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Abu Sufyān set out for Ḥunayn while outwardly professing Islam, yet the very divining arrows he used for augury were still tucked in his quiver.

Shaybah ibn ʿUthmān al-ʿAbdarī said, “Today I shall avenge my father”—his father had been slain on the day of Uḥud—“today I will kill Muḥammad.” He continued, “I maneuvered around the Messenger of Allah intending to strike him, but something came upon me and engulfed my heart so that I could not release my blow. I then realized that he was being protected.”

ʿĀṣim related to me from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from his father, that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ witnessed the people’s flight he said, “ʿAbbās, cry out: ‘O assembly of the Anṣār, O companions of the Tree!’” They replied, “At your service! At your service!” Each man tried to wheel his camel around but could not, so he threw the coat of mail from his neck and headed straight for the voice until one hundred of them had gathered around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They drew up opposite the enemy and engaged them in combat. At first the rallying call was to the Anṣār in general; in the end it singled out the Khazraj, who were renowned for their steadfastness in battle.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose in his stirrups, surveyed the melee and declared, “Now the furnace is truly ablaze!” By Allah, the people had scarcely rallied before the captives were already standing before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Allah slew whom He willed, routed whom He willed, and granted His Messenger their wealth, women, and children as spoils.

Ibn Luhayʿa narrated—through Abū al-Aswad—from ʿUrwah, and Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah reported likewise: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for Ḥunayn, all the people of Mecca went with him—none stayed behind—mounted and on foot; even the women walked, hoping for a share of the booty and feeling no aversion should a calamity befall the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions.

Ibn ʿUqbah also said: Whenever a shield or sword slipped from one of the Companions, Abū Sufyān would call out to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, “Hand it to me; I will carry it until my camel is fully laden.”
