Very little of his narrations can be traced, for he died before the usual time for students to begin transmitting.
Abu al-ʿAbbas Ibn Surayj and others studied jurisprudence under him.
Shaykh Abu Ishaq remarked: “He was the reason the people of Baghdad became energetic in copying and memorising al-Shafiʿi’s works on jurisprudence.”
He passed away in Shawwal 288 AH in Baghdad.
215 – Ibn Abi ʿAsim, Ahmad ibn ʿAmr Abu Bakr al-Shaybani*
A great ḥāfiẓ, eminent imam, and outstanding scholar who followed the prophetic reports and authored many works.
He came to Isfahan as its judge and there spread his knowledge.
Abu Shaykh said, “He held an extraordinary station of integrity and chastity.”
Abu Bakr ibn Mardawayh said, “A ḥāfiẓ with a vast collection of hadith; he compiled the Musnad and other books.”
Abu al-ʿAbbas al-Nasawi said, “Abu Bakr ibn Abi ʿAsim—that is, Ahmad ibn ʿAmr ibn al-Dahhak ibn Makhlad al-Shaybani—was from Basra, one of the ascetics of the mosque, firmly upon the Sunnah and hadith, devoted to worship, enjoining right and forbidding wrong. He kept company with the devout—among them Abu Turab—and travelled with him. His legal inclination was the ẓāhir (literalist) approach, and he was a trustworthy, noble, long-lived scholar.”
