He heard ḥadīth from Abū al-Yamān, Ādam ibn Abī Iyyās, ʿAlī ibn ʿAyyāsh, Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Kātib, and others of their generation.
Those who transmitted from him included Ismāʿīl al-Ṣaffār, al-Najjād, Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī, Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn Makhram, and others.
Ibn ʿAdī said, “His narrations are sound, except for the report of the Cave (1); because of that, some critics found fault with him (2).”
Al-Khaṭīb stated, “In our estimation he is trustworthy and firmly reliable (3).”
He passed away in Jumada al-Akhirah of the year seventy-eight (4) AH.
200 – ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abī al-Shawārib al-Umayyad*
The ḥāfiẓ, Imām, Chief Judge, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Umayyad of Basra.
(1) The “hadith of the cave,” that is, the report of the three men who sought shelter in a cave and were shut in when a rock blocked the entrance. It was transmitted by al-Haytham ibn Jamil, from Mubarak ibn Fadala, from al-Hasan al-Basri, from Anas; see Tarikh Baghdad 6/207–209. An authentic version also comes through Abdullah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab; the full text is found in al-Bukhari 4/369–370, 5/12, 6/367, 10/338, and in Muslim, no. 2743.
(2) See Ibn Adi, al-Kamil, MS Kh:13. Al-Khatib remarks on Ibn Adi’s judgment in his Tarikh 6/207: “Several transmitters have narrated the hadith of the cave from al-Haytham. Ibrahim ibn al-Haytham is trustworthy and firmly established; our teachers hold no difference about him. I have not found any scholar who knows the objection Ibn Adi reported, and even if it were verified, it would not undermine his reliability, for earlier authorities sometimes had individual narrations questioned without that preventing their use as evidence.” See the continuation of his comments there.
