Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

His narrations were classed as ḥasan (fair).

Al-Dāraqutnī said, “Reliable and trustworthy.”

Ibn Abī Ḥātim said, “He wrote to us sending the hadith of Abū ʿUbayd, and he was truthful.” (1)

Abū Bakr ibn al-Sunnī stated, “I heard al-Nasāʾī being asked about ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, and he replied, ‘May Allah disgrace him,’ three times.

Someone asked, ‘Will you narrate from him?’ He said, ‘No.’

They asked, ‘Was he a liar?’ He answered, ‘No, but a group gathered to read something to him and they honored him with whatever small gift they could. Among them was a poor stranger who had brought him nothing, so ʿAlī refused to relate hadith while he was present. The stranger said he owned nothing except a wooden bowl, so ʿAlī told him to fetch it, and then he narrated.’ (2)

Ibn al-Sunnī went on, “I later heard that people faulted him for accepting that gift. He replied,

‘O people, we are a folk who live between the two rugged peaks. (3) When the pilgrims depart, Abū Qubays calls out to Qaʿiqʿān, saying, “Who remains?” and he answers, “The neighbors of the Sanctuary remain.” Then he says, “Close up!”’ (4)

He died in 286 AH, though it is also said: in 287 AH.
