Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

—for al-Muʿtamad, and he was one of the Christians of Kaskar (1).

He was known for his almsgiving, benevolence, and nightly prayers, though he possessed but scant refinement. He entered the vizierate in 266 AH and was granted the honorific title “Holder of the Two Vizierates.”

Al-Ṣūlī said: “Al-Muwaffaq arrested him in 278 AH. I was told that about two million dinars and five thousand head were taken from him; al-Muwaffaq obtained this from him gently and courteously, never harming him. Among the property seized were three thousand white and black mamluks, and although he was detained, it was with honor. He was left an estate that yielded twenty thousand dinars annually.”

Aḥmad ibn Abī Ẓāhir said: “The cash taken from him amounted to one million dinars. A pavilion of his, valued at one hundred and twenty million dinars, was also confiscated; it contained eighteen thousand garments of khazz (silk-and-wool brocade), forty ratls of gold, jewels worth fifty thousand dinars, vessels priced at two hundred thousand dirhams, three thousand silk garments, and six brocade carpets—the largest measuring forty-five cubits long by twenty-six cubits wide. More than one hundred thousand pieces of Chinese ware were likewise taken, and he enumerated other such items the like of which even kings did not possess.”

Ibn al-Najjār records in his History that he died in Ṣafar, 276 AH.

Abū al-ʿInāʾ used to frequent his house; when they told him, “He is praying at the moment,” he replied, “Every novelty has its own delight.”
