“I saw in a dream as though a voice was saying, ‘ʿUthmān—meaning al-Dārimī—has been granted a tremendous portion (of merit).’
Muḥammad ibn al-Mundhir Shakkar said, “I heard Abū Zurʿah al-Rāzī and asked him about ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd.” He replied, “That man has been blessed with masterful authorship.”
Abū al-Faḍl al-Jārūdī said, “ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd was an imam to be emulated during his lifetime and after his death.”
Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Ṣarrām related, “I heard ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd say, ‘We do not probe the modality of these attributes, we do not deny them, and we do not attempt to explain them.’ ”
It has reached us that an elderly man who envied ʿUthmān ad-Dārimī once said to him, “What would you be were it not for knowledge?” He answered, “You meant it as a slur, but it has turned into praise.”
Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī (1) informed us; ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar informed us; Abū (2) al-Waqt al-Sijzī informed us; Abū Ismāʿīl al-Anṣārī informed us; Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Jārūdī, Yaḥyā ibn ʿAmmār, and Muḥammad ibn Jibrīl dictated it to us; and Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān also informed us, saying:
Abū Yaʿlā Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Wāshiqī al-Harawī informed us, ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd ad-Dārimī informed us, Yaḥyā al-Ḥimmānī informed us, from Ibn Numayr, from Mujālid, from al-Shaʿbī, from Jābir, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “If Moses were to appear to you and you followed him while abandoning me, you would indeed stray from the straight path. And if he were alive and reached the time of my prophethood, he would surely follow me.” (3)
