and if not, then let me go on my way for two months.’

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, ‘Dismount, Abū Wahb.’
Safwān said, ‘No, by Allah, I will not dismount until the matter is made clear to me.’
The Prophet said, ‘Very well—you may travel freely for four months.’

After that, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out before the campaign against Hawāzin, he sent to Safwān asking to borrow his equipment and weapons. Safwān asked, ‘Is it of my own accord or under compulsion?’ The Prophet answered, ‘Of your own accord.’ Safwān therefore lent him the gear and the arms, and he went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while still an unbeliever. He was present at Hunayn and at al-Ṭāʾif as an unbeliever, whereas his wife was a Muslim. Yet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not separate them until Safwān accepted Islam; she then remained with him under that same marriage contract. Roughly a month elapsed between their two conversions.

Umm Ḥakīm, daughter of al-Ḥārith ibn Hishām, was married to ʿIkrimah ibn Abī Jahl. She embraced Islam on the day of the Conquest, while ʿIkrimah fled and reached Yemen. Umm Ḥakīm set out after him, reached him there, and invited him to Islam, so he accepted. He then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; when the Prophet saw him, he leapt up in joy, cast his cloak over him, and accepted his pledge of allegiance. Thus they both remained upon their existing marriage.

Al-Wāqidī said: ʿAbd Allah ibn Yazīd al-Hudhalī related to me, from Abū Ḥuṣayn al-Hudhalī, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ borrowed fifty thousand dirhams from Safwān ibn Umayya, forty thousand from ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī Rabīʿah, and forty thousand from Ḥuwayṭib ibn ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā. He distributed that wealth among his Companions who were in straitened circumstances, and from that same sum he sent funds to the clan of Jadhīmah.

Yūnus narrated from Ibn Shihāb, who told me on the authority of ʿUrwah, who said: ʿĀʾishah reported that Hind, daughter of ʿUtbah ibn Rabīʿah, said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, there was no household or tent on the face of the earth whose people I wished to see humiliated more than the people of your tent; yet today there is no household or tent on the face of the earth whose people I wish to see honoured more than the people of your…’
