I add: Abū Zurʿah produced an informative Tārīkh (chronicle) in a single volume.⦗1⦘ When the scholars of Rayy came to Damascus, they were impressed by Abū Zurʿah’s learning and gave their own companion—the ḥāfiẓ ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Karīm—his kunyah.⦗2⦘
Nakhwah bint Muḥammad narrated to us; Ibn Khalīl narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Ṭarsūsī narrated to us; and Aḥmad ibn Abī al-Khayr informed me, from al-Ṭarsūsī: Abū ʿAlī the Qurʾān-reciter narrated to us; Abū Nuʿaym the ḥāfiẓ narrated to us; Sulaymān ibn Aḥmad narrated to us; Abū Zurʿah narrated to us; Abū al-Yamān narrated to us; Shuʿayb narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, who said: Ṭāwūs related:
‘I said to Ibn ʿAbbās, “People report that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘Perform ghusl on the day of Jumuʿah, wash your heads—even if you are not in a state of major ritual impurity—and apply perfume.’”’
He replied, ‘As for the bath, yes; as for the perfume, I am not sure.’⦗4⦘
(1) It was published by the Academy of the Arabic Language in Damascus in two volumes, edited by Shukrallah ibn Niʿmat Allah al-Qawjani.
(2) His biographical notice has already appeared on p. 65, no. 48.
(3) The author records her biography in his Mashyakha, MS fol. 173: “She is Nakhwa daughter of Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Qahir ibn Hibat Allah, known as Umm Muhammad al-Nasibiyya and later al-Halabiyya, resident of Hama. She was born on the road to Mecca in 634 AH/1236-37 CE and heard hadith from the hafiz Ibn Khalil; I do not think he transmitted to any woman other than her. She was the wife of the army overseer ʿIzz al-Din ibn Qarnas al-Hamawi. She died in Jumada I 719 AH/1319 CE.”
(4) Reported by al-Bukhari, no. 884 (Book of Friday Prayer).
Perfuming oneself on Friday is likewise narrated from the Prophet by Salman al-Farisi: al-Bukhari 2/308-309, with the wording: “If a man bathes on Friday, purifies himself as best he can, applies some of his oil or touches a perfume from his house, then goes out without separating two people, prays what has been prescribed for him, and keeps silent while the imam speaks, he will be forgiven for what is between that Friday and the next.”
Ahmad 3/81 and Abu Dawud, no. 343, transmit a similar report from Abu Saʿid al-Khudri and Abu Hurayra: “Whoever bathes on Friday, wears his best clothes, touches some perfume if he has it, then comes to the Friday prayer without stepping over people’s necks, performs whatever prayer Allah has written for him, and listens attentively when his imam appears until he finishes, it will expiate the sins between that Friday and the previous one.” Al-Hakim declared it sound (1/283) and al-Dhahabi concurred.
