Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

and Ibn Muḥammad al-Rāfiqī, Muḥammad ibn Ayyūb al-Ṣammūt, and a number of others.

Al-Nasāʾī said, “There is nothing objectionable about him.”

He did transmit some rejected reports from his father, and I do not know whether the fault lies with him or with his father (1).

It was said that he died on the Day of Sacrifice in 280 AH. Another report states that he passed away in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of 281 AH.

He also composed refined poetry, delightful to every person of taste. Among his verses are:

A tongue that once articulated each word with mastery will perish—would that it might be spared when summoned for the Reckoning!
Good manners are worthless if unaccompanied by piety, and no mis-pronouncing tongue can harm the God-fearing.

Khaythama ibn Sulaymān related these further lines from him:

Accept the excuses of the one who comes to you apologising, whether what he says be true or false;
He has obeyed you who pleases you in outward conduct, and he has revered you who disobeys you yet keeps it hidden.

He lived past the age of ninety, and a number of his hadiths have reached us.

144 – His brother: Aḥmad ibn al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Hilāl al-Bāhilī *

He served as the judge of the lands of Muḍar—al-Raqqa and its environs—and died in 276 AH while still in office.

He narrated from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar and ʿUbayd ibn Jannād, and among those who transmitted from him were Ibn Ḥadhlam, Khaythama ibn Sulaymān, Abū al-Maymūn al-Bajalī, and several others.
