al-Shāfiʿī, Aḥmad ibn Yūsuf ibn Khallād, Aḥmad ibn al-Rayyān al-Lukkī, Khaythama ibn Sulaymān, ʿUthmān ibn Sanaqah, Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥrim, ʿUmar ibn Salm al-Khuttulī, Abū Bakr al-Qaṭīʿī, and many others besides them.
Ibn Khallād al-Naṣībī narrated from al-Kudaymī that he said: ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī told me, “You possess material that I do not.” (1)
Al-Kudaymī also said: “I wrote from one thousand one hundred eighty-six shaykhs, and I performed the pilgrimage in the year 206 AH; there I saw ʿAbd al-Razzāq but did not hear from him.” (2)
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad reported: I heard my father say, “Muḥammad ibn Yūnus al-Kudaymī had sound ḥadīth and solid knowledge; the only thing held against him was his companionship with Sulaymān al-Shādhakūnī.” (3)
Al-Ḥasan al-Ṣāʾigh recounted: Al-Kudaymī narrated to us, saying, “ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī, Sulaymān al-Shādhakūnī, and I once went out for a stroll. No place remained for us except the governor’s garden, and the governor had forbidden anyone to go into the open country. No sooner had we sat down than the governor arrived and said,
‘Seize them!’ So they arrested us. I was the youngest; they threw me on my back and sat on my shoulders. I said, ‘Your Excellency! Listen: al-Ḥumaydī narrated to us, Sufyān informed us, from ʿAmr, from Abū Qābūs, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: “Show mercy to those on earth and the One in heaven will show mercy to you.”’ (5)
He said, ‘Repeat it.’”
