the Quran); Kitāb al-Qirāʾāt (The Qurʾanic Readings); Kitāb al-Anwāʾ (Weather Signs); Kitāb al-Taswiyah bayna al-ʿArab wa al-ʿAjam (Equality Between Arabs and Non-Arabs); and Kitāb al-Ashribah (1) (Beverages).

He was appointed judge of Dīnawar and was a leading authority in Arabic philology, historical reports, and the chronicles of peoples.

Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī said, “He held the views of the Karrāmiyyah.” (2)

The author of Mirʾāt al-Zamān (3) transmits without a chain from al-Dāraqutnī that he said, “Ibn Qutaybah inclined toward anthropomorphism.” (4)

I reply: This report is not sound; yet even if it were, then away with him—there is no favoritism in matters of religion.

(1) See the introduction to Ibn Qutayba’s al-Maʿarif, edited by Dr. Tharwat Okasha, and his remarks there on Ibn Qutayba’s corpus. (2) The Karramiyya are named after their founder Muhammad ibn Karram (d. 255 AH/869 CE). He began by affirming the divine attributes, but then took this affirmation to excess, so that—according to the reports about him—he ended up in tashbih and tajsim (likening God to His creation and declaring Him a body). The author states in al-Mizan: “Among the innovations of the Karramiyya is their claim concerning the worshipped One, exalted be He, that He is a body unlike other bodies.” Dr. Suhail Mukhtar has published a valuable study on the Karramiyya and their philosophy that merits consultation. For the biography of Muhammad ibn Karram, see Mizanu l-Iʿtidal 4:21–22 and Lisan al-Mizan 5:353–356. (3) This refers to Shaykh Yusuf Qaz-ughli, Abu l-Muzhaffar, better known as Sabt Ibn al-Jawzi (d. 654 AH/1256 CE). (4) How can this view be attributed to him when the very book he composed to refute the Jahmiyya and the Mushabbiha disproves it? On p. 243 he writes: “The sound approach to these reports is to believe in whatever of them has been reliably transmitted by trustworthy narrators: we affirm the vision (ruʾya), the self-disclosure (tajalli), that He marvels, that He descends to the heaven, that He is established upon the Throne (istiwaʾ), and His nafs and two hands—without asking how, setting limits, or extending by analogy what has come to what has not. We hope that, with this statement and conviction, we shall—God willing—be on the path of salvation tomorrow.”
