I say: Certain people were mistaken and stated that he died in 273 AH. The correct view is that he passed away with two nights remaining of Jumādā al-Ākhirah in 276 AH. This date was recorded by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yūnus and others.
Among his merits is that he was one of the leading mujāhidūn (warriors in the path of Allah); it is said that he fought in seventy expeditions.
One of the reports he transmitted runs as follows: Muḥammad ibn ʿAṭāʾ Allāh (1) in Alexandria informed me; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Makkī narrated to us in 646 AH; Khalf ibn ʿAbd al-Malik, the ḥāfiẓ (hadith master), informed us; Abū Muḥammad ibn ʿAttāb told us; the ḥāfiẓ Abū ʿUmar al-Namari informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik told us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yūnus related to us; Bakīʿ ibn Makhlad related to us; Hāniʾ ibn al-Mutawakkil related, from Muʿāwiya ibn Ṣāliḥ, from a man, from Mujāhid, from ʿAlī—may Allah ennoble him—who said: “Were it not (2) that I might forget the remembrance of Allah, I would draw near to Allah by nothing other than invoking blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Gabriel said, “O Muḥammad, Allah says: Whoever invokes blessings upon you ten times is guaranteed protection from His wrath.”’” (3)
