and wrapped himself in it, after which he prayed eight rak‘ahs—the mid-morning supererogatory prayer. Muslim recorded this report.
Al-Layth transmitted from al-Maqburī, from Abū Shurayḥ al-‘Adawī, who said to ‘Amr ibn Sa‘īd while the latter was dispatching detachments to Mecca, “Grant me leave, O commander, to relate a statement the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proclaimed the morning after the Conquest. My two ears heard it, my heart retained it, and my two eyes saw him as he spoke it. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: ‘Allah has declared Mecca inviolable; people did not declare it so. It is not lawful for anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day to shed blood therein or to cut down a tree. If someone cites the fighting of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in it, say to him: Allah granted permission to His Messenger, but He has not granted it to you. He allowed me in it only for one hour of a single day, and its sanctity has returned today as it was yesterday. Let those who are present convey this to those who are absent.’”
It was said to Abū Shurayḥ, “What did ‘Amr reply to you?” He answered, “He said, ‘I know that better than you, Abū Shurayḥ. The Sanctuary does not grant refuge to a sinner, nor to one fleeing retribution for blood, nor to one escaping after causing corruption.’” Agreed upon.
Sufyān ibn ‘Uyaynah narrated, from ‘Alī ibn Zayd, from someone who informed him, from Ibn ‘Umar, who said: On the day Mecca was opened, while the Prophet ﷺ was standing on the steps of the Ka‘bah, he declared, “Praise be to Allah who fulfilled His promise, supported His servant, and single-handedly routed the confederates. Know that the indemnity for quasi-intentional homicide—killing with a whip or a stick—is one hundred camels, forty of them pregnant. And know that every pre-Islamic claim to honor or blood-money now lies beneath these two feet of mine, except the custodianship of the House and the watering of the pilgrims; these I have confirmed for their possessors.” Its chain of transmission is weak.
Ibn Isḥāq said: “‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb told me, from his father, from his grandfather….”
