so he sits up, wipes his eyes, and says, “Let me pray.”⦗1⦘
Al-Diyāʾ al-Ḥāfiẓ also recorded it in al-Mukhtārah⦗2⦘, by way of Muwaffaq al-Dīn Ibn Qudāmah.
134 – Muḥammad b. Jābir b. Ḥammād, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Marwazī*
The Imām, ḥāfiẓ, jurist, and eminent scholar, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Marwazī.
He heard ḥadīths from Hudbah b. Khālid, ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī, Shaybān b. Farrūkh, Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, Abū Muṣʿab al-Zuhrī, Ḥibbān b. Mūsā, ʿAlī b. Ḥujr, Isḥāq b. Rāhwayh, Aḥmad b. Ṣāliḥ, and their contemporaries in Khurasan, the Ḥijāz, Iraq, Egypt, and Syria.
He collected ḥadīths, authored works, and excelled.
Among those who transmitted from him were al-Bukhārī in his History, Ibn Khuzaymah, Abū Ḥāmid b. al-Sharqī, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Daghūlī, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Maḥbūbī, and others.
Al-Ḥākim said of him: “He was one of the leading scholars of his age; death overtook him in the …”
(1) The report is found in Sunan Ibn Majah, no. 4272, in the Kitab al-Zuhd, chapter “Remembrance of the Grave and Decay.” All the transmitters are reliable, except that Abu Sufyan—whose name is Talhah b. Nafiʿ al-Qurashi—heard only four hadiths from Jabir, all of which were recorded by al-Bukhari. Al-Busayri notes in his Zawaʾid, fol. 271, that the chain is sound (hasan) provided Abu Sufyan actually heard it from Jabir; this narration is not one of those four. Ibn Hibban also included it in his Sahih, Mawarid, no. 779, through the route of Ismaʿil b. Hafs al-Ibli, but the nisba “al-Ibli” has been mistakenly written “al-Ayyili.”
(2) Muhammad b. ʿAbd al-Wahid al-Maqdisi al-Hanbali, the hadith scholar, was a leading authority and authored several valuable works. Portions of the present book are preserved in the Zahiriya Library, Damascus, but he did not complete it. Ibn Kathir remarks in al-Baʿith al-Hathith, p. 29, that some of our teachers preferred it to al-Hakim’s Mustadrak. Al-Zarkashi, cited by al-Suyuti in al-Laʾali, states that his grading of hadiths is of higher quality than that of al-Tirmidhi or Ibn Hibban. He died in 643 AH.
